Not everyone is looking for a top of the line mountain bike and many of us are just looking for a fun but reliable bike that keeps us active in the summer. For this reason we have compiled an updated list of the best mountain bikes you can buy for under $500. Keep in mind that for the price you can expect that most bikes will:
- Come with Shimano Tourney drivetrain
- 3 speeds in the front, 7 in the back
- Coil suspension at around 70-80 inches of travel
- Basic mechanical disc brakes or even calipers in some models.

Giant Revel 2
The Revel is one of the 26″ recreational bikes from Giant that comes with an SR Suntour fork, Shimano Tourney based 7 Speed drivetrain and Giant components. Note that this bike comes with city tires, which will perform very well in gravel terrain too.
The Giant ATX is another bike from Giant that comes with 27.5 wheels and equipped with Shimano Tourney 7-speed drivetrain as well as Giant components. The ATX has a bit slacker geometry so it will perform better in green trails.
Cannondale Catalyst 3
The Catalyst is another good recreational mountain bike from Cannondale that comes equipped with a mix of Shimano Tourney and Sunrace components. The fork is coil based with 75mm of travel.
There’s nothing wrong with riding one of the cheapest bikes available from Trek because they are known to be good, reliable and long lasting. The 820 is equipped with a 75mm suspension fork, Shimano Tourney and Bontrager components.
